Mad Bad Cyclists

Poisonous rant of the month comes from Jamie the dick of Bristol in the UK. According to Jamie cyclists are "evil-doing two-wheeled terrorists of the modern world" and "one of the greatest scourges of contemporary Britain." He even accuses us of eating lentils and tofu!

Just look at these two troublemakers planning their next vegan meal.

The scourge of modern society.

Letter from Maroubra

We've had a lot of debate on the letters pages here lately after the road rage incident at Mascot. Most of the noise has come from motorists (including 4wd owner Eric Roozendaal, our Minister for Gridlock) who have sought to justify this maniac's actions because the cyclists shouldn't have been on the road in the first place. It's bizarre the level of hatred that some Australian's feel towards cyclists and I've been pondering why they feel so angry. I believe the answer lies in Australian's superlative ability to deny aspects of reality that they are uncomfortable with.

Aussies are great at denial but we do turn very nasty if anyone threatens to burst our bubble. For example, environmentalists, anti-war protesters, academics, the ABC and of course those terrorists of the road, Cyclists. Aussies hate those kind of people, bloody do-gooders. Drivers know it's wrong to be driving a one ton, polluting vehicle in an age of global warming and oil wars, but because everyone else is doing it they find it easy to justify. Easy that is until they see some bastard who is doing the right thing. Worse the cyclists don't even have to sit in traffic jams, they just cruise on through! On top of that they don't have the additional costs that cagers endure. You can see why they get all cross. You don't expect them to blame themselves for traffic congestion do you? My personal favourites are those cars with "Stop Global Warming" stickers...sheesh.

Anyhow I was reading a mailing list and I saw this letter that someone has sent in to the Herald. I am assuming it won't get published so I thought I would put it up here because it is an excellent letter. The author got his figures from here:

Bryan's letter to the SMH as follows:

>
>For some strange reason drivers of polluting motor vehicles feel
>they have more of a right to drive on any road than a cyclist
>because they pay registration fees for their vehicle. A quick check
>of the RTA's website to look up the 2007 Financial Statement reveals
>the followings FACTS that these people should bear in mind the next
>time they get the urge to yell abuse at a cyclist using their road:
>
>Page 3 of 33 of the Financial Statements, Total Expenses Excluding
>Losses - (Consolidated), shows: $2,262,575,000.00
>Revenue from Sale of Goods and Services shows=$296,292,000.00
>
>A difference of $1,966,283,000.00
>
>Seems to me that it is the drivers of motor vehicles who are being
>subsidised by all the taxpayers of NSW. If these selfish,
>narrow-minded, single-occupancy vehicle drivers believe they have a
>god given right to the road, then perhaps they'd care to pay their
>fair share and relieve the tax burden on the people who choose not
>to drive. I can imagine how they'd scream and wail at the thought
>of the registration fees going up a whopping one thousand per cent,
>judging by their recent bleatings.
>
>I have a car, it's registered, insured and in good working order. I
>also have the option of catching a bus to work or cycling. Many
>days I choose to cycle. Why? For the simple reason that I get
>exercise to and from work, I don't have to wait fifteen minutes to
>get on an overcrowded, stinking bus with people farting, belching,
>scratching and yelling into their mobiles over the top of their
>neighbour's blaring mp3 player.
>
>Cycling to work reduces greenhouse gases and health expenses as I am
>fitter and less stressed.
>
>The people who say cyclists increase their travel time should stop
>and think how much more their travel time would increase if the
>cyclist you just squeezed past or ran off the road in your single
>occupancy, six-cylinder gas guzzler was in another six-cylinder gas
>guzzler and was in front of you! You can't squeeze past them as
>you've run all the cyclists off the road and into gas guzzlers, and
>now the roads are practically grid-locked. Who are the Luddites
>going to blame now for all the traffic. The last traffic jam I saw
>was caused by too many motor vehicles. Cyclists don't cause traffic
>jams as yes, quite rightly, they go onto a footpath to get around
>it. So would you if you weren't so lazy, got out of your tin can,
>got some exercise and lived a more active and happy life rather than
>fuming at the wheel.
>
>I also see more cars going through red lights, which has more
>serious consequences than if a cyclist goes through a red light.
>
>Yours sincerely,
>Bryan Freeman

A lesson from Cuba

Photo from Dbell2006
The fall of the Soviet Union brought tough economic times to Cuba. Motorised transport ground to a halt and Cubans were forced to turn to their bicycles to get around. The effect on the health of the population was dramatic. Obesity was halved, diabetes fell by 51%, coronary artery disease was reduced by 35% and strokes fell by 20%. Australia's struggling health system could benefit hugely from a cycling revolution.

Cyclist run down by drunken Klutz

Alleycat champ and cycling advocate Jan Whelan, (who appears in the video below) was run down by a drunk motorist and badly injured while riding with her friend Rachel Harris in downtown Orlando, Florida.

Whalen is an avid bicycle activist and singer. In addition to leading the UCF bike club, she is an active member of Orlando Critical Mass.

Whalen described the collision as sounding like a bomb went off. "I woke up in the road and heard Rachel screaming and when I looked over at her it looked like her face was covered in blood," she said. The motorist, identified as 24-year-old Amy Klutz, who struck Whalen and Harris was given several sobriety tests at the scene of the accident and later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Whalen suffered from a broken collar bone, four broken ribs, a fractured hip and various abrasions. Harris suffered from bruises on her head and severe abrasions.

Put The Fun Between Your Legs: Women who ride bikes

The Bicyclist

The Bicyclist is my number one favourite internet TV show. It is set in wet and windy Portland which is the capital of hipster bike culture in the USA. A lot of it is filmed in a bike shop called the recyclery
You can watch all the episodes for free here

My favourite character is Steve Jones, she is a super cool bike mechanic in her mid-twenties, independent, smart and funny (when no one’s looking.) Steve is played by Elle Poindexter

That's Steve in the armchair...
I made friends with Steve via her Myspace page and she has promised to come and ride in the next Sydney Body Art Ride!

You can see all the cool Portland Bohemians doing their thing in this video from the Dandy Warhols:

Rate a plate

This is a fun new website. Hours of amusement can be derived from reading the offences listed under "Intimidate or endanger cyclist"

TONY VERMEER
6 April 2008
Sunday Telegraph
The site logs dates, times and locations of driver
errors, along with number plates.

These are plotted on a Google map, allowing visitors
to look for offending drivers in their own suburbs.

A new feature allows companies to register their
vehicle number plates and keep track of their
employees' driving behaviour through the site.

The most commonly reported complaints are speeding,
illegal parking, defective vehicles and drivers using
mobile phones.

More than 40 traffic offences have been reported,
including eating at the wheel.

The driver of one P- plated vehicle was
"observed attempting to eat a marathon roll while
trying to turn from Pennant Hills Rd into Loch Maree
Ave at Thornleigh".

Site co-founder Simon Dakin said the idea was to use
the Internet's power and community involvement to make
a difference to road safety.

Mr Dakin said the site had procedures aimed at weeding
out malicious reports.

Velo Rock!

Just drove my car to work every day,
I didn’t mean to hurt nobody
Like 100 million other people just like me,
I couldn’t tell there was any other way,
I just couldn’t realize but now I think I’ll throw it away
There’s 7 billion other people just like me

I was thinking about blowin’ up all the automobiles
It seemed like such a good idea
You said hey man wouldn’t that be hypocritical
No way man cuz mines’ the first to go
Do it,
Now,
Stick a rag in,
Light the fucker up

I was thinking about melting down all the cars in the whole world
Making brand new mountain bikes for all the boys and girls
You said hey man wouldn’t that be helter skelter
No way man all we need is a giant smelter
Send it to Peoples Park,
Berkeley CA, 94704

Ride a fucking bike
Ride a fucking bike
Ride a fucking bike

I just lit my car on fire today I didn’t mean to hurt nobody
Just like 100 million other people just like me,
I could tell there wasn’t any other way
I finally realized and now it’s going up in flames
Cuz there’s 7 billion other people just like me
Having fun, since I was six, We’re only bike terrorists
Five thirty,
second Friday,
Berkeley Bart

Thea O'Connor

Yesterday I read one of the best articles on bicycle commuting that I've seen in a long time. It was buried in one of the ever multiplying supplements that accompany our weekend paper. Normally "My Career" goes straight into the recycling bin at our house but my partner was glancing through it and spotted this article by Thea O'Connor. I can't understand why it was in "My Career," I think it should have been in the main paper where people would see it, but perhaps it was a bit too sane for that sort of exposure. Thea has obviously done a bit of research and provides some excellent statistics that would be very useful for all you bicycle advocates out there. As I doubt more than about a dozen people would have seen it I've scanned it for you. Click on the image for a full size version.

Cycle Chic

Ms Spokes at London Cycle Chic has some excellent tips on what to wear to avoid arriving at work feeling all sweaty and grotty after your morning commute. She also has some ideas for exercises to improve your riding skills. Here are some more ideas I found on the World Wide Web...
